Deal Drivers: Greater China
Mergers and acquisitions in H1 2020 and beyond
The below agenda is presented in CST / HKT.
-
As the earliest regions impacted and who have made some steps to recovery from COVID-19, China and Hong Kong SAR are being closely watched for M&A recovery momentum in the 2H of the year.
Dealmakers strived to pull the M&A back to the negotiation table, though difficulties still exist as the prolonged outbreaks in other parts of the world dampened demand and continue to disrupt supply chains. In H1 2020, China and HKSAR outbound investment recorded the lowest six months M&A deal value since 2005.
The silver lining for Greater China M&A lies in the government’s continuous efforts to attract foreign investment and push for domestic industry restructuring. Inbound transactions value rose by 110.3% YoY in H1 2020 (US$15.8bn; 69 deals). Private equity funds’ resumed buyout activities generated US$24.4bn across 64 deals in H1 2020, increasing 71.5% in value compared to 2019.
Hong Kong’s historical hot spot on real estate M&A continued in 1H 20 but notably financial service and consumer sectors were emerging to the forefront. Primarily driven by sliding valuations, HK Ex’s privatization activities still lead the top deal list.
