Mr. Aivalis has been the CEO of Prometheus Energy Group since 2013 and has been named as the COO of Stabilis Energy. Both Stabilis Energy and Prometheus Energy have been focused on the North American small scale LNG production and distribution business for 6 and 14 years respectively. Prior to joining Prometheus Energy, Jim was President and CEO of ThruBit LLC, now a Schlumberger company, which developed enhanced drilling and data acquisition tools for horizontal wells and unconventional reservoirs.
Prior to ThruBit, Mr. Aivalis was Managing Director for Tenaris Connections after a 22 year career with Schlumberger with roles in Operations, Engineering, Sales and Integrated Project Management for North and South America. His is an engineering graduate of Florida Institute of Technology and has authored 6 US patents enhancing well construction technology.
Howard Barnwell joined BMO Capital Markets in 2012 and serves as a business development and transaction manager and chief operating officer for the A&D group. Prior to joining BMO Capital Markets, Howard was an investment banker in the Global Energy and Mergers and Acquisition groups at UBS. Since joining BMO Capital Markets, Howard has successfully advised and executed on over $20 billion in M&A and financing transactions. His transaction experience includes all the major U.S. basins. Howard holds an M.B.A. with high honors from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is also a CFA Charterholder, member of SPE and was previously recognized by Oil & Gas Investor as a “40 under 40” award winner.
Brian is an accounting and deal management partner in Deloitte Advisory’s Mergers, Acquisitions, and Divestitures practice. Brian has over 25 years experience at Deloitte & Touche LLP, including a vast range of services such as M&A transaction advisory services, audit, accounting consultation, Carve-out, IPO and other special projects. Brian is our National Advisory M&A Energy & Resources Industry Leader and serves national and international clients on a wide array of transactions.
Brian focuses his efforts primarily in the energy and resources industry, along with related industrial products businesses, serving financial (private equity and infrastructure investors) and large strategic buyer clients. He has experience with targets ranging from utilities, power, energy trading and marketing, refining, storage, pipelines, oil & gas exploration, oilfield energy services, alternative energy, cleantech, shipping, engineering and construction, waste management, and other manufacturing and service companies. Brian has assisted clients on transactions ranging from tens of millions of dollars to a potential $25bb private equity buyout of a publicly traded company and numerous strategic buyer acquisitions in excess of $10bb.
Brian’s experience includes more than 12 years assisting clients in all aspects of mergers, acquisitions and divestitures and more than 10 years of providing attest services to a large mix of clients across the energy industry, including two Fortune 500 power and utility companies.
Brian is currently a licensed CPA in New York and New Jersey. He is a member of the AICPA and the NJ Society of CPA’s.
Brian graduated Cum Laude from Rider University in 1993 and earned his MBA with Beta Gamma Sigma distinction in 2003 from Columbia University.
Mary Kogut Brawley is a debt finance partner in the Houston office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Her practice spans a wide array of debt financing transactions, including the representation of private equity funds, hedge funds, mezzanine funds and private and public companies. Mary has successfully handled complex financings in connection with leveraged buyouts, public offerings, reserve-based financings and refinancings, and restructurings (including in-court and out-of-court restructurings, debtor-in-possession financings, and exit financings).
Known for her unique ability to calmly and masterfully advocate for clients in high stakes negotiations, Mary is a “go to” attorney for complex transactions. With clients ranging from EIG Global Energy Partners and Sanchez Energy Corporation to Apollo Global Management and LINN Energy, Mary has been involved in some of the most high profile recent acquisition-related financings and restructurings in the energy industry.
Rocío Cárdenas Zubieta has 25 years of experience in the hydrocarbons sector, specifically in areas of marketing, strategic planning and project development. Rocío Cárdenas is the Executive Director of Pimienta Energy a hydrocarbons trading company and consultant to several companies with crude oil production areas, storage and transport infrastructure projects in México.
From 2009 to October 2011, Rocío Cárdenas was Executive Director of PMI Comercio Internacional, the company responsible for the marketing of Pemex’s crude oil in the international market. During that period, she was a member of the Pemex Executive Team.
Previously, she was Commercial Director of Refined Products at PMI Comercio Internacional and Director of PMI Trading, position in which she carried out the international marketing of refined products and LPG, as well as the supply of refined products for the Mexican market.
From 2001 to 2004 she was President of PMI Holdings North America, PMI Services North America, and Executive Director of PMI Norteamérica, companies of the PMI Group in charge of creating required infrastructure in the United States such as refineries, terminals and pipelines. She was a member of the Managing Team of Deer Park Refining, a joint venture between PMI Norteamérica and Shell Oil US.
She is a Chemical Engineer from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, with executive courses in negotiation and business management at Harvard, MIT and IPADE.
Nate is a principal in Deloitte Digital, Deloitte Consulting LLP. He has more than 20 years of industry and consulting experience, and leads the US Energy and Resources Digital practice. Nate focuses on digital transformation, technology strategy, and large-scale program management and governance. He has extensive experience in oil and gas (up, mid, and downstream) and major industrial companies. He has a Bachelor of Science from Bucknell University and has written numerous articles on technology strategy and digital energy.
Tom Davidson is Editor for Acuris Studios, the sponsored events and publications division of Acuris. He focuses on event content and special features. Tom joined Creditflux in 2005 and moved to New York in 2012 to setup the Creditflux US office. After Creditflux was acquired by Acuris Global, he moved to the Studios team. He graduated from Cambridge University with an MSci in Natural Sciences.
Patrick Gimlett is a Managing Director at AB Private Credit Investors, an $8.4Bn middle market credit fund. Gimlett leads the team’s originations activities in the energy sector and covers generalist financial sponsors located in Dallas and Houston. He also assists with fund-raising and deal-sourcing within AB’s financial advisor network. Gimlett was previously with GE Capital’s Energy Financial Services Group, where he originated investments in the oil and gas and midstream industries. Gimlett holds a BBA in finance from the University of Notre Dame. He lives in Houston with his wife (Julie) and daughter (Lila).
Scott Johnson has been a Managing Director and co-owner of Chiron Financial since early 2016. Chiron is an investment bank which assists middle market companies in energy and other industries with raising debt and equity capital and with asset sales and mergers. Chiron has deep experience in start-up and growth capital placements as well as distress advisory assignments and financial restructuring. .
Mr. Johnson has over 30 years of experience in investment banking and energy, with a particular focus on the oil and gas industry. He began his career at Goldman Sachs, where he became a senior member of the Energy Group, based in New York. In 1991 he moved to Houston and co-founded Weisser, Johnson & Co., an investment banking firm concentrated in energy and especially on oil and gas producers. Mr. Johnson also co-founded and managed GasRock Capital, an energy mezzanine debt and equity investment firm.
Mr. Johnson received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College, Magna Cum Laude, and his MBA from Stanford University.
Mr. Malanga is an officer of GulfSlope and is responsible for leading the financial function of the organization, overseeing strategic planning and analysis, accounting and reporting, treasury, tax, audit and risk management. Mr. Malanga worked as a senior investment banker with the energy firms of Weisser, Johnson & Co. and Sanders Morris Harris Inc. Mr. Malanga began his investment banking career with Jefferies & Co. Over his career, he has participated in capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, and financial advisory transactions with particular emphasis on providing strategic and financial advice to emerging growth companies. Mr. Malanga holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Texas A&M University and a Master in Business Administration with a concentration in finance from Rice University.
Lucia Martinez is the Head of Energy and Natural Resources North America Group at Standard Chartered Bank. Based in Houston, she is responsible for regional strategy and client relationships across the Americas oil and gas franchise. Lucia has over 20 years of banking experience in the energy sector. She joined Standard Chartered Bank’s Houston office in 2010.
Lucia previously worked at BNP Paribas Fortis, where she was a Director and Relationship Manager in the Offshore and Energy Services Group since 2006. From 2003 to 2006 Lucia was a Vice President and Relationship Manager in the Oilfield Services Group of Calyon Corporate and Investment Bank. Prior to Calyon, Lucia spent five years as an Associate in the Energy Group at CIBC Oppenheimer.
Lucia obtained the certification of Chartered Financial Analyst in 2003 and received her BS (Summa Cum Laude) in Finance and Marketing from Texas A&M University.
Mr. Murphy with 15+ years of experience in O&G is a co-founder of Citla Energy, an independent E&P company funded by private equity funds, Mexican pension funds, the World Bank and the China-Mexico Fund. He founded Citla in 2014 as a Mexican company with the mandate of building an investment portfolio of E&P assets in the Mexican GoM.
After raising a first-round of $560 mm USD, putting together a strong team and consolidating alliances with independents and NOCs, Citla has an important participation on an exploration area that covers over 2,500 km2 in shallow and mid-waters. He holds responsibility as CFO and New Ventures as well as JV Management.
From 2009 to 2014, Alex founded an operated a boutique investment bank focused on energy and construction companies many of them service companies working in Mexico. Formerly he spent a couple of decades in the financial industry in corporate finance, M&As, regulatory and project financing.
He is and Industrial Engineer by the Universidad Iberoamericana, holds an MBA and corporate finance certificates from Itam, and executive programs from IPADE, Harvard Business and Kennedy Schools.
Terry Padden graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He subsequently developed industrial equipment for Mori Seiki, a leading international machine tool builder. He earned his Master of Business Administration from Berkeley's Haas School of Business and worked for Harris Williams & Company in San Francisco before joining Simmons Energy | A Division of Piper Jaffray℠ in 2011.
Tim Perry is a Managing Director of Credit Suisse in the Investment Banking and Capital Markets division. He is the Co-Head of Global Oil & Gas, based in Houston. Mr. Perry joined Credit Suisse First Boston in June 1999 from JPMorgan, where he was a Vice President in the Oil and Gas Group. Mr. Perry holds a BSBA degree from the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville) and an MBA degree from Vanderbilt University.
Joel is a principal in the Merger & Acquisition Consultative Services practice with Deloitte Consulting LLP. He has more than 20 years of professional experience, including significant experience advising and working with senior executives to drive shareholder value through the full lifecycle of M&A transactions. He has successfully led efforts in M&A strategy, transaction advisory and integration, and divestiture planning and execution across multiple industries.
Mr. Schmitz is a Managing Director with Scotiabank's Energy Group in Houston, responsible for the Oil & Gas portfolio for Latin America & the Caribbean. Prior to joining Scotiabank, he held various senior positions with WestLB in Brazil and the U.S, including deputy of the Houston Energy Branch and Co-Head of the Mining Team for the Americas.
He has over 20 years of experience in structuring corporate and project finance debt across Latin America & the Caribbean. During his tenor, Mr. Schmitz has arranged over USD $20 billion bank facilities in the region. Mr. Schmitz holds a master degree in economics from Vienna University of Economics and Business (Austria).
Niloy Shah oversees commercial aspects of Ridgewood Energy’s offshore oil and gas activities including land management, oil and gas marketing, and strategic planning. He began his career with BP (Amoco) in 1985 and spent 32 years with the company before joining Ridgewood Energy in 2017. His most recent positions included Head of Planning & Commercial Operations for the Americas, Global Head of Commercial Operations, CFO for the Gulf of Mexico Business, and CFO for the Asia Pacific Business. He has had central functional roles and a number of commercial roles for BP businesses in Alaska, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Indonesia, Mexico, Vietnam, and the US Gulf of Mexico.
Mr. Shah has a B.S. and M.S. from the University of Tulsa and an MBA from the University of Houston.
Brooks Shughart is a Managing Director at First Reserve, a leading global private equity investment firm exclusively focused on energy. With 35 years of industry insight, investment expertise and operational excellence, the Firm has cultivated an enduring network of global relationships and raised over USD $31 billion of aggregate capital since inception. First Reserve has completed over 650 transactions (including platform investments and add-on acquisitions), creating several notable energy companies throughout the Firm’s history. Its portfolio companies operate on six continents, spanning the energy spectrum from upstream oil and gas to midstream and downstream, including resources, equipment and services, and associated infrastructure.
Mr. Shughart joined First Reserve in 2012, and his responsibilities include investment origination, execution and exit, focusing on the reserves sector. Prior to joining First Reserve, he was a Director in the Mergers and Acquisitions Group for Credit Suisse. Prior to Credit Suisse, he held positions in the energy groups of Lazard Freres and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette/CS First Boston. Mr. Shughart holds a B.B.A. from The University of Texas.
J.W. Sikora is Managing Partner and co-founder of Cibolo Energy Partners. Mr. Sikora most recently served as a Principal with The Carlyle Group in the Energy Mezzanine Opportunities Group from 2013 through 2016. Based in Houston, Mr. Sikora’s responsibilities consisted of business development and origination of debt and equity investment opportunities in the upstream and midstream sectors, investment structuring, valuation, execution of legal documentation, due diligence, and ongoing portfolio management. Prior to joining Carlyle, Mr. Sikora spent five and a half years as an Assistant Vice President with TCW/EIG Global Energy Partners in their Houston office. As a member of the EIG investment team, Mr. Sikora focused on mezzanine debt and equity investments made across the energy value chain in the upstream, midstream, mining, and power sectors. During his tenure at TCW/EIG, Mr. Sikora was involved in 17 financings totaling over $4.5 billion. His responsibilities included valuation, investment structuring, due diligence, and portfolio management. Prior to TCW/EIG, he was a Senior Analyst for NGPC Capital Resources and worked as a member of their investment team focused on mezzanine facilities provided to the energy industry. Mr. Sikora holds a B.A. in economics from the University of Texas at Austin.
Jesse Thompson serves as senior business economist at the Houston Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Thompson, who joined the Bank in 2010, performs research and analysis on issues affecting the Houston and Gulf Coast economy. In particular, he studies issues surrounding area hydrocarbon industries. He also collects information for the Dallas Fed’s Beige Book summary of current economic conditions. He is author of the monthly Energy Indicators, the Houston Economic Indicators, and contributes to the quarterly publication Southwest Economy.
Thompson earned an MA in economics, with emphasis on empirical microeconomics, and BA in philosophy and economics from the University of Houston.
Jason Turowsky is a Partner with Intervale Capital. Intervale Capital is a Houston based private equity fund exclusively focused on energy services investments. In addition to fund oversight responsibilities, Jason is actively involved in sourcing, evaluating, executing and monitoring investments. Before joining Intervale in 2013, Jason spent the preceding 10 years at Falconhead Capital, a New York based middle market private equity fund focused on investments across a wide range of industries. Prior to Falconhead, Jason worked at UBS Investment Bank where he advised on a variety of capital markets and M&A transactions. Jason received his B.A. in Economics, with honors, from the University of Pennsylvania.
Chad Watt is a veteran business journalist and natural resources editor for Mergermarket in North America. Before joining Mergermarket, Chad worked as a reporter and editor at the Dallas Business Journal and Orlando Business Journal and at daily newspapers in Texas, Florida and North Carolina. He is a Southeast Texas native and graduate of Columbia University and Southern Methodist University. Chad is a father of two boys and has completed three marathons since turning 40. He joined Mergermarket Group in 2010.
