The three sectors driving the US M&A revival

US M&A has hit new heights in 2014. This has been driven by three sectors, which are forging ahead of other industries.

White & Case’s new report explores the sectors that drove US M&A in 2014

Three sectors—technology, media and telecommunications (TMT), energy, mining and utilities (EMU) and pharma, medical and biotech (PMB)—accounted for the lion’s share of US deal value in 2014, with activity driven by consolidation, strong foreign appetite for assets and tax inversions.

In the TMT sector, there were 1,029 deals with a deal value of US$302bn, a 6% increase from 2014. The sector also saw a disproportionate number of megadeals.  A major driver was providers increasing their offerings to include mobile alongside television, telephone and broadband, so that they are able to bundle them together in ‘quadruple-play’ packages to customers.
